The Adventurer

The Adventurer

Advanced - 5.5 Hours

This trip is for experienced kayakers only, and not for the faint of heart; it takes us out past the breakers of Adam Island and around Calivigy, requiring us to carefully read the wind and wave conditions to safely navigate around the barrier reef.

We begin with route and safety briefings on the dock, followed by some kayaking technique tuition which includes essential tips to help you get the most out of the trip. We focus on teaching our guests to kayak with the best possible technique through our comprehensive and concise ‘on dock / on water’ instruction session. Depending on the number of people in the group and their experience levels, this generally takes between half an hour to an hour before we set off on our adventure and greatly improves your ability to paddle on the ocean.

You will immediately put your new skills to the test as we paddle along the dramatic rocky cliff coastline of Le Phare Bleu Bay to reach the magnificent mangroves of Egmont Point. Here, you will learn about the unique mangrove ecology, wildlife, and ecosystem services of Grenada. From here we round the point, cruising over a vibrant, turquoise shallow reef surrounded by corals and sponges while you enjoy the uplifting effect of the ocean.

The bay opens up before you to reveal Gary Island, an uninhabited islet bursting with wildlife; birds flutter between groves of cacti and mangrove branches, schools of juvenile fish dart in and out of mangrove roots, and the ebb and flow of the ocean creates a tranquil chorus. We continue northwest along the coast of Egmont Harbor, letting the current do the work as we weave our way between shallow reefs. We then cut across the bay to a popular local beach where lunch is laid out and you have the option to swim in the warm, shimmering sea or just relax with an ice cold drink. We then continue around the bay to observe a shifting landscape of beach, mangrove, and coastline habitats.

Now things get really exciting - we venture away from the coastline and you feel the excitement of paddling towards the horizon between Adam Island and Fort Jeudy, and to the breakers of the barrier reef beyond. From here, our experienced guides read the conditions to plot the safest course around Adam Island and between the outermost breakers and Calivigny, guiding you safely through white caps and the rocky shoreline. As you round Calivigny Island conditions settle and the wind and waves, now at your back, send you back towards the safety of the shoreline. We cruise past The Beach House and get an up close and personal view of a private island resort for the rich and famous. Leaving the well-to-do behind, we re-enter Le Phare Bleu Bay and paddle between two dramatically opposite but equally beautiful habitats; a rocky cliff beside us and a turquoise reef below us.

We return to the serenity of Le Phare Bleu Marina where you can enjoy exploring the 120-year-old lightship and museum, lunch at Island Fever restaurant, a cold drink by the pool, or relaxing on the beach. The Marina showers, located just down the hall from Conservation Kayak, are also available to all of our guests.
